How to Clean 5 Indoor Allergen Gold Mines

Anyone with allergies knows that the indoors don't necessarily provide an escape from irritating symptoms. Sometimes, your home can be the source of some of the worst allergens - specifically in the following areas. Be sure to clean properly and run an air purifier, like the Holmes® True HEPA Allergen Remover, to keep your home environment as comfortable and safe as possible.

1. Windows
Improperly sealed windows can cause more than just a cold draft this winter. They're also the culprit for letting in outdoor pollution. Consult with a professional who can help seal them accordingly, and clean the frames regularly to eliminate dust and other particles that can irritate those in your household.

2. Floors
Leaving your shoes at the door may not completely protect your floor from dirt and grime. When you think of all that touches your carpet, tile or wood flooring, it's no surprise that it's one of the most allergen-filled areas in your home. Dust mites and pet dander can get trapped between the fibers of a rug, and dirt and other particles can pile up on harder surfaces as well. Regularly vacuum and mop your floors to keep allergens at bay.

3. Pet Areas
Your pets may be cute, but they can also carry particles that are irritating to the humans who live with them. Bathe them regularly and, when cleaning your home, pay special attention to the areas that they frequent. Try to keep them off couches and bedding, as dander can get trapped and cause more irritation.

4. Pillows
You may not want to hear this, but the pillow you sleep on every night can harbor dust mites and bacteria that can aggravate allergies. Replace pillow cases every week or so, and be sure to do the same for your sheets and comforters.

5. Shower Curtains
Mold in your bathroom is common and can be eliminated with regular cleaning. Be sure to spray mold-eliminating cleaner on all surfaces of your bathroom, including the shower curtain, to keep irritating particles from harming your health.
