Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for desk and great price! Hi. This is a great product that helps me with my allergies at my desk at work. I have always had allergy flare ups in my current workplace office. After getting this product, it feels like I can breath so much better and don't have as many allergy flare ups at my desk. I have it at my desk right beside me, and on any of the settings it is not too loud or bother me or my coworkers. I tend to keep it on the lowest or second lowest fan speed setting. I don't use the ionizer very often. I also like the aer1 true-hepa replacement filter. Thanks for making great products that anyone can afford!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prevents headaches I've used an older model (white) model for several years. I keep it near the bed and it prevents me waking up with headaches. Without it, I'd have to wipe down the room every night. As someone noted below, the inside eventually got dirty. I took the unit apart to clean the inside. I even managed to get all the screws back where they belong. Four screws were hidden under the feet and a strip. I'll cut off the ends of the strip exposing the screws so next time, I can leave the strip in place and have access to the screws. It's possible that the unit got dirty inside because I may have bought an after-market filter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I have the older model Bought the model before this one I believe HAP9240. I consistently cleaned the unit and changed the filter each month with the green quality AER HEPA filters. I thought it was working well until I shined a flashlight down the outlet side of the unit, (where the fresh "purified" air is coming out of) and it was filthy. Yes I have the filter in right and yes it has a good seal. I know it's a cheap purifier but I wasn't expecting that amount of dirt and particles on the fresh air side of it. I enjoy Holmes products and I'd like to see Holmes make this right and correct it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stops nearby dust and smoke pronto Positioning this small air purifier is critical. I have one over the cat litter boxes in our RV. I use non perfumed litter so dust smell is my enemy. I have asthma and allergies. This air cleaner with the ionizer on works so well that we hardly notice the litter boxes. I also add a large hepa at night during high pollen. My daughter uses hers at night near the bed. It cleans and creates white noise. She is an LPN and adores her air cleaner and her sleep. Our third 242 is near the computer in the guest room at our cottage. Great for cleaner smells and white noise. This room has carpet and tends to have an odor that I can smell. Not so with the ionizer on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They last forever I bought this to replace one I had for 45 years. It was still working but when I saw this one on sale. Well it was a sale. I once tried another company that had a TV commercial showing how quickly it removed air pollutants. Well it blew up and caught fire in less then 30 days. From then on I will only buy Holmes products and you should too

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cleans well, but is rather loud I have had mine for some years now, and just looking at the old filters tell you it cleans well. BUT, it is so darn LOUD! I have always slept with a purifier running because I can't sleep with it too quiet. But this machine is right on that too-loud threshold. Granted, it is in a very small room, but my older machines had a more reasonable volume. Another downside is I can't figure out how to take the case apart for a good deep cleaning. Older styles were very easy. I had to borrow someone's air compressor to get all the dust blown out of it, which was making it even louder. So, if you want a machine that filters well, this one will make you happy. If you need to sleep with White Noise, this will also help, but it may be a bit too loud for you if you have it in a small room.

Our ionizer may produce an occasional popping or cracking sound. This is normal and occurs when a small buildup of ions is discharged.&#13;&#10;After extended use, you may notice dust around the grills or front panel.&#13;&#10;&amp;bull; This is caused by negative ions exiting the air outlet, evidence of the ionizer&amp;rsquo;s air cleaning effectiveness.&#13;&#10;&amp;bull; You can remove the dust with a soft brush or clean, damp cloth. Larger particles may be attracted to positively charged surfaces throughout the home, like walls or floors.&#13;&#10;&amp;bull; This may occur more frequently when the filter is nearing the end of its useful product life and unable to capture as many charged particles.&#13;&#10;&amp;bull; Excessive amounts of pet dander, dust, or smoke may decrease the life expectancy of the filter(s) and interfere with the ionization process.&#13;&#10; &#13;&#10;To help prevent particles from attracting to surfaces throughout your home:&#13;&#10;&amp;bull; You may want to run the ionizer less often.&#13;&#10;&amp;bull; Check the condition of the filter(s) more frequently.&#13;&#10; &#13;&#10;CAUTION: The ionizer in this appliance produces less ozone than the UL* established limits of 50ppb. However, in high concentrations, ozone can be harmful to birds and small pets. To prevent ozone buildup, we suggest using the ionizer in well ventilated areas with the fan on. <div class="bvseo-author">Answered by: HolmesSupport</div> <div class="bvseo-pubdate">Date published: 2018-06-30</div> </div> </div> <div class="bvseo-question-answer" data-questionid="3431566"> <h2 class="bvseo-question"> filter type for holmes hap 240 please </h2> <div class="bvseo-question-detail"> </div> <div class="bvseo-author">Asked by: ullrich</div> <div class="bvseo-answer" data-answerid="3175355"> Thank you for your inquiry. Ions are tiny particles that carry a positive or negative charge. These ions exist naturally around us, in the air, water and ground. Both positive and negative ions are colorless, odorless and completely harmless. Negative ions help the air purification process by attaching themselves to very small airborne particles in the room. &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;These particles take on a negative charge and may join with positively charged particles such as dust, pollen, smoke and pet dander to form larger particles that are then more readily captured by the filter system, or may be attracted to positively charged surfaces throughout the home, like walls or floors. This may occur more frequently when the filter is nearing the end of its functional life expectancy and is able to capture less of the charged particles. &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;You may also note after extended use, that dust may have collected around the grills or front panel. This is from the ionization affect caused by the negative ions exiting from the air outlet. This is additional evidence of the air cleaning effectiveness of negative ions. The dust can be easily removed with a clean, damp cloth or soft brush. &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Finally, using your ionizer may result in an occasional popping or cracking sound. This is a normal sound, generally caused by particles of dust that are interrupting the flow of ions, causing a small build-up of ions that, when discharged, cause the popping or cracking sound. &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Using the ionizer in conjunction with dirty filters may result in dirty particles exiting the air purifier and being attracted to walls, carpets, furniture or other household objects. These dirty particles may prove very difficult to remove. Homes with excessive amounts of pet dander, dust, or smoke may decrease the life expectancy of the HEPA filtration system. You may want to run the Ionizer less often and check the condition of the HEPA filter(s) more frequently. <div class="bvseo-author">Answered by: HolmesSupport</div> <div class="bvseo-pubdate">Date published: 2017-01-19</div> </div> </div> <div class="bvseo-question-answer" data-questionid="3007347"> <h2 class="bvseo-question"> What filter does it take and how much does it cost? </h2> <div class="bvseo-question-detail"> </div> <div class="bvseo-author">Asked by: bobeeo</div> <div class="bvseo-answer" data-answerid="2826307"> Thank you for your question.
