4 Ways to Deodorize Your Home Without Chemicals

Few things ruin the comforting feeling of arriving home quite like hitting a wall of odor as you enter the door. Worse yet, a bad smell can put off guests and maybe even keep them from returning. Scrubbing the house from floor to ceiling or using an artificial air freshener could do the trick, but they might just add another layer of unpleasant smells to the problem.

Fortunately, when simply taking out the trash or changing the litter box doesn't cut it, there are plenty of all-natural solutions to make your home that smell as fresh as the day you moved in.

1. Vinegar
A mixture of vinegar and water makes a great all-purpose disinfectant, according to House Cleaning Central. A 1 to 1 ratio in a jar or a spray bottle can remove stuck-on odors from most sources, although the scent of vinegar may linger for a while. The source warned that vinegar can eat away at marble and natural stone, however, so it should be kept clear of those surfaces.

2. Citrus
Fruits such as lemons and limes can also neutralize bad smells locked into your home and they leave a much more pleasant aroma than vinegar. In addition to general deodorizing, they can help clean areas that are tough to get to. Microwaving a bowl of water with a few chopped citrus fruits in it can help unstick stubborn smells, while throwing a few into the garbage disposal can keep it from collecting odors from old food stuck inside.

3. Baking soda
A box of baking soda in the refrigerator is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it's good for much more than that. Sprinkling baking soda into carpet 30 minutes before vacuuming can help lift odors out, according to Good Housekeeping, while pouring some into a litter box can help absorb one of the foulest smells around.

4. Air purifiers
For a more hands-off solution, you might want to look into an air purifier. A HEPA-type air purifier can capture most of the unwanted particles in your home's air, pulling odors right out of the air rather than just masking them. If cigarette smoke is a problem in your home, consider the Holmes® Smoke Grabber Ashtray to cut the scent out at the source before the damage is even done.
